Crampons are designed to provide traction on ice or snow during walking or winter climbing. There are belt crampons, called basket crampons, which fit any type of mountain footwear, as well as more advanced semi-automatic and automatic crampons, which require dedicated footwear. They can be made of steel and light alloys such as aluminum.
